The design competition in Freiburg centers around the gas sphere, with a new building for culture and events

THE WHIRL
A New Cultural and Event Space in Freiburg
The project is awarded first prize for its exceptional design.
Access
The new building is accessible via four different entry points. The main access route leads from the path to the Dreisam Bridge, directing visitors straight toward the center of the „Whirl,“ beneath the gas sphere. This area is primarily designed for pedestrians and cyclists. Another vehicle access route runs northeast via the drivable Fischermatte. Additionally, a path from the Dammpfad leads visitors up a gentle ramp directly to the building’s entrance. The southeastern access is mainly used for deliveries and remains more discreet. A continuous network of pathways connects all access points, ensuring clarity and easy navigation.
Concept
The gas sphere forms the core element of the design and is highlighted by the new building. The „Whirl,“ which spatially embraces the gas sphere, opens generously toward the northwest, creating a welcoming gesture. The space beneath the gas sphere becomes a magnetic focal point for visitors and artists, who can immerse themselves in its unique ambiance. From this central point, the foyer, dining area, and additional rooms are accessible. Visitors find themselves directly in front of the gas sphere, allowing them to experience it from various perspectives.
Nature
A natural water feature with vegetation is created directly beneath the gas sphere, echoing the atmosphere of the nearby Dreisam River. This oasis enhances the quality of stay and reflects incoming light onto the floating gas sphere. Artists can also use this space to develop art installations. Additionally, there is designated space for bicycle parking beneath the gas sphere, while a total of 13 car parking spaces are arranged around the exterior.
Inclination
The „Whirl“ not only follows a horizontal motion but also a vertical inclination. At one end of the building, it rises from the ground, following a smooth, barrier-free ramp that leads to the upper café area and the access point to the gas sphere. The ground-floor dining area is complemented by a rooftop café, which can also operate independently thanks to a small service space. The building’s sidewall facing the gas sphere is inclined, seamlessly integrating into the space to create the impression that the gas sphere rests gently in the „throat“ of the structure. The design largely avoids sharp corners, opting instead for soft, flowing curves. The windows align with the organic shape of the gas sphere, and the interior design reflects this fluid aesthetic.
Gas Sphere
Access to the gas sphere itself is provided via a tower in the southwest and the ramp. Artists have a separate entrance leading directly to their dedicated areas in the southeast. Inside the gas sphere, a small stage with an auditorium for up to 20 visitors is integrated. This design builds upon previous studies.
Construction & Facade
The desired form of the building could be achieved through a simple wooden rib structure. The facade contrasts harmoniously with the cool metal of the gas sphere, featuring warm wooden elements that create an inviting and pleasant atmosphere both inside and outside.
Dreisam Riverside Open Space
A curved ramp connects the building to the Dammpfad and the newly developed open space directly along the Dreisam River. Wave-like terraces follow the natural slope of the landscape, creating generous seating and lounging areas for visitors along the riverbank. A small, cantilevered platform extends directly over the water, offering an immersive experience of the surroundings, enhancing the atmosphere, and providing a stunning viewpoint.
